Our Story

From generation to generation

Passed down from father to son for three generations, our shared passion has united us around a common project: crafting cuvées that highlight the complexity and elegance of our terroirs. We are now two brothers at the helm of this family Champagne house.

Retired

  • 1969: Guy plants his first plot of Pinot Noir in Epernay (0.10 ha)
  • 1971: The family moves to Mareuil-le-Port. Guy was initially employed by Domaine Cordoin and began planting in the village. The entire harvest is sold to the major Champagne houses.
  • 1980: Dominique joins his father, bringing a new dynamic to the development of the vineyard. Takeover of Daniel HARLIN's great-uncle's vineyard at Tours-sur-Marne, classified as a Grand Cru. Membership of the Bouzy cooperative and the Union Champagne (Avize).
  • 1985: Creation of the SCEV ‘Champagne Harlin Père & Fils’ by Monique and Guy and their sons Dominique, Raynald and Bruno. Acquisition of the estate at 8 rue de la Fontaine in Mareuil-le-Port.
  • 1990: Installation of the pressing centre, vat room and cellar for the production of our champagnes.
  • 1993: Launch of our first in-house cuvée, a proud moment for the whole family.
  • 2000: Expansion and modernisation of the pressing centre and winery. Only the Grand Cru cuvée is still made at the cooperative. The vineyard now covers 8.5 hectares.
  • 2012: Guy, Monique, Bruno and Raynald give way to Maxime and Guillaume, who now work with their father, Dominique. Beginning of trials with plant-based treatments (phytotherapy) and biodynamic methods and grassing of plots.
  • 2015: Widespread use of phytotherapy and tillage to reduce the use of synthetic plant protection products.
  • 2016: High Environmental Value (HVE) and Viticulture Durable en Champagne (VDC) certification, reflecting our commitment to the environment.
  • 2017: Total abandonment of synthetic chemical products in favour of natural treatments (copper, sulphur and phytotherapy).
  • 2019: Extension of the storage cellar and winery to improve our winemaking processes. Final departure from the cooperative. Planting of a ‘forgotten grape variety’, Petit Meslier at La Fortelle.
  • 2021 : Adoption of a herd of Ouessant sheep to maintain and revitalise the soil in winter. Official start of organic conversion.
  • 2024: Organic Farming certification. Launch of a new range of champagnes following the development of our wines through our working methods. Launch of a ‘harvest 2.0’ system.

Our Terroirs The minerality of wines begins beneath our feet

Champagne is famous for its chalky soils, but we also find other types of soil.

Most of our vineyards are located in Mareuil-le-Port, in the heart of the Marne Valley, where the clay soils give the Meunier grapes roundness and generosity, while the sandy slopes provide freshness and finesse.

Our plots in Tours-sur-Marne and Épernay are on chalky soils that produce frank, fine wines with a long finish.

This diversity of soils allows us to play with a wide range of aromas in our blends, using the Meunier, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Petit Meslier grapes we grow with precision.

The quality of the soil plays an essential role in the wine's aromas. As a result, we have naturally opted for sustainable viticulture that respects and enhances the soil (grassing, biodiversity, sheep, tillage, 0 herbicides).

Organic viticulture & biodiversity Vintners and players of the Champagne Landscape

Sustainable and organic winegrowing are voluntary approaches based on the commitment of winegrowers to ensure the long-term future of their vineyards, while protecting the environment and human health.

Our estate favours natural treatments based on purins, herbal teas and plant decoctions to replace chemical treatments and limit the doses of copper and sulphur.

The vine is a living organism that needs to be cared for in order to preserve its health and ensure its survival. By helping it to develop its roots in living soil, it can draw on all the richness and minerality of the soil to produce the finest grapes.

The development of biodiversity is also at the heart of our concerns. As well as sheep and grass, we regularly plant trees and hedges around and within our plots to provide a habitat for the different species in our vineyards.

Our wine-growing practices When terroir and innovation meet

In 2024, we completely rethought our approach to harvesting. The traditional 45 kg crates have been replaced by boxes weighing less than 20 kg, to better preserve the quality of the grapes. As soon as they arrive at the estate, the crates are placed in a refrigerated container, ensuring that the aromas are preserved until the grapes are pressed in our 4,000 and 2,000 kg presses.

In the vat room, we've replaced the old vats with small, temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and oak barrels, to isolate each plot (1 vat = 1 plot, 1 type of soil and 1 grape variety).

Sulphiting is carried out with mineral sulphur, which we prepare ourselves from sulphur rock, a more natural solution that allows us to reduce our doses of sulphite even further.

So we work with greater precision in our blends and intervene as little as possible in our wines to respect our soils and grape varieties.
